Welcome to the 2010 Mt. Taylor Quadrathlon

The Quad is a 42 mile race to the top and back of the highest peak in Northwest New Mexico.  The race is staged in Grants, New Mexico.  Grants is located 1 hour west of Albuquerque on I-40.

Mt. Taylor is 11,301 ft. high.  The race constists of 4 parts; road bikes, running, cross country skiing, and snow shoeing.  If this is your first visit, here is a description of the race:
Bike:
Racers begin at an elevation of 6,500 ft. with a 13 mile road race through the streets of Grants and then begin the 1,700 foot climb from desert cactus to ponderosa pine.
Run:
At the end of the paved road, bikes are parked and racers must run the next five miles on gravel roads. The road generally starts out dry but usually turns to snow pack. This part of the course will climb 1,250 feet in elevation.
Cross County Ski:
Runners then turn to cross-country skis to challenge the next 1,200 foot climb of the mountaineering ski course that covers two miles. During the final yards of this course you must face the notorious "Heart Break Hill" that lies waiting for weary racers.
Snowshoe:
The remaining one mile climb on snowshoes gains 600 feet to reach the 11,301 foot summit of Mt. Taylor where a person can see for over one hundred miles on a clear day.
and then...
The race is only half over. You must reverse the four events and race the 21 miles back to the Start/Finish line.  Watch our 2 part video in the video section below for a more detailed description of the race.

Here is a report from January 19, 2010.

I was up on Mt Taylor today cross-country skiing and here is what I saw.
0-1" snow in town at 6500'
3-6" snow between 7000' and 8000'
x-c skied in snow 1'-2' deep at 8200' at the bike/run transition (with some wind drifts to 4')
beyond the paved road has not been plowed and has 4x4 truck tracks on it.  8" of fresh snow on the road over the old tracks.

This report was before our weekend storm on January 22.  You can safely assume all the measurements above are doubled.  The following photos are at mile marker 5, 8, and the end of the pavement at the bike/run transition.

Have a question about the race that is not answered in "Frequently Asked Questions? Click Here

What is the elevation gain on each leg of the Quad?

Start/Finish to Bike/Run 1700 ft.
Bike/Run to Run/Ski 1250 ft.
Run/Ski to Ski/Snowshoe 1220 ft.
Ski/Showshoe to Summit 600 ft.
Total elevation gain-4770 ft.

As a team, how do we get to the transition areas on the mountain?

Each of the team members who are going to be on the mountain must utilize the shuttle system provided by the Quad staff.  Buses will transport participants from the Start/Finish to the Bike/Run transition.  Once there, other smaller vehicles continue to transport participants to the Run/Ski transition.  From there, participants racing the Snowshoe portion must walk to the Ski/Snowshoe transition via the up hill ski course.

What time does the shuttle service begin?

Early shuttles leave the Start/Finish at 6:00 am and continue until 8:00 am depending on the number of participants.

What type of skis are used for the Quad?

Skate cut skis or Classic cut skis will work equally well for this course depending on your skill level in either discipline.  Climbing skins are recommended.

Are ski poles allowed during the showshoe portion of the event?

Ski poles are allowed and encouraged during this phase of the race.

What would be the best gear to buy for wearing in the moutains...to stay warm, yet keep cool enough!?

Depends on weather that day. Layering is important and wind/water resistant. Early morning bike needs golves, and ear protection Dry socks and shoes at bike run, add warmth at run/ski change to skis ad warmth if needed at ski/showshoe change to snowshoes. This is a short all out run some layering can be left behind. However this transition can be minus 30 wind chill or plus 30 windbreaker hat and exposed skin protection.  Snowshoe down a fun run.  Once back on skis layer up as this is where you can get cold as physical activity low.  Run down dry socks.  Bike down expect head wind.
